Program

Dmitri Shostakovich: Violin Concerto No. 1
Ralph Vaughan Williams: Dona Nobis Pacem

Description

Hear two seminal works from the mid-20th century, both impacted and influenced by a tumultuous age. Festival favorite Christian Tetzlaff returns to play Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1, a piece that was hidden by its composer during a time when he was persecuted by the tyrant Joseph Stalin. Carlos Kalmar leads the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus in Ralph Vaughan Williams' choral masterwork Dona Nobis Pacem, written between world wars as a plea for peace. .
