Nathan Mills, Principal OboeOboe
Nathan Mills, Principal Oboe
Where is your hometown?
Where did you study?
I'm actually still in school! I am currently in the graduate program at The Juilliard School, studying under Nathan Hughes. I also went to Juilliard for my undergraduate degree and studied under Elaine Douvas.
What are some of your career highlights?
Winning the Grant Park principal oboe audition this past March! Another recent highlight was playing Mahler's Ruckert Lieder under Fabio Luisi and Thomas Hampson with the Pacific Music Festival this past summer in Japan. Definitely an "it" moment for me!
What are you most excited about in joining the Grant Park Music Festival?
I'm most excited to have the opportunity to play great repertoire for such a huge audience! Very different from a formal indoor concert, and it seems like a lot of fun to be able to reach out to so many people at once.
What would you be if you were not a musician?
Maybe a writer - have been a big reader since I was little and used to write constantly before I got old enough to realize it wasn't any good, hah.
What are you reading right now?
The Cat's Table by Michael Ondaatje. Big contemporary fiction follower!
Have you spent much time in Chicago?
Not at all - my audition for the orchestra was actually the first time I had ever been!
What are you looking forward to during summers in Chicago (besides playing at the Grant Park Music Festival)?
Warm weather and exploring Chicago! I have lived in NYC for a long time, so I'm looking forward to living in a different big city for a while.
