Elizabeth Beilman

What is your hometown?

Chicago, IL

When did you join the Grant Park Music Festival?

Where do you live now?

Salt Lake City, UT, where I am a member of the Utah Symphony.

Where did you study?

B.M. The Juilliard School, M.M. University of Southern California

What do you love most about your instrument?

The viola is the shape shifter of the string section. Sometimes, we play a bass role to complement the melody in the violins and sometimes we get a more prominent solo line. It is a lot of fun to play the inner line in orchestral and chamber music!

What would you be if you were not a musician?

I would love to be a diplomat.

Who would you love to work with in a future musical collaboration (conductors, guest artists) who you have not previously worked with?

I would love to some day have the opportunity to work with Andris Nelsons or Simon Rattle.

Can you share any memorable stories about your experience with the Grant Park Music Festival?

From where I sit on stage, I have a perfect view of the sun setting over the Chicago skyline. I can't imagine a better way to spend a summer evening.

What’s on your playlist at the moment?

Anything baroque, and I love watching the Berlin Phil Digital Concert Hall.

Any hobbies?

I love hiking and cooking with my husband.
