Experience a Festival Season to Remember
In February, Festival Circle and Impresario Society members attended an exclusive Season Preview event on the stage of the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, in which WFMT's Candice Agree interviewed Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Carlos Kalmar and Chorus Director Christopher Bell about the 2017 Festival season.
"Every concert features something really outstanding and interesting," Kalmar remarked as he walked the audience through the 2017 season. Throughout the evening, he highlighted personal favorites, such as Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, Stravinsky's The Firebird, and Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 2, which will be guest conducted by world-renowned Australian conductor Simone Young.
"I strongly believe that this Festival is absolutely unique," said Kalmar. "We are in the center of the city, and identity is very important to us. We play to the crowds that come to our concerts. We play the warhorses that people grow up with and know and love. Next to that, we are champions for pieces by famous artists that are lesser known. And lastly, it's important that we feature American music."
"What we have in the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus is a very sophisticated and extraordinary sound, " Bell added. "Across all the groups, it's about achieving a standard that the music deserves."
